Spearfish is home to a variety of courts, fields, trails, greens and more for those die-hard sports enthusiasts and the outdoor hobbyists. So, whether you’re wanting to catch the next baseball game or get a group of friends together for a game of sand volleyball, or maybe even a morning of rock climbing with your family, Spearfish is a sports-enthusiasts playground.

Adrenaline in the Hills
Spearfish Canyon offers a variety of activities for all kinds of sports-lovers. If rock climbing is your thing, try out the seven different spots all with their own variety of routes and ranges. And, a bonus, in the winter there are three climbable flows in the canyon for avid ice climbers.
And, speaking of winter, all around the Spearfish area there are trails and trail systems for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, fat biking, and even snowmobiling. There are a multitude of places where you can strap on your cross-country skis or snowshoes and get outside to enjoy the wintery landscape. For the fat biking fans, the Big Hill/Tinton Trail System and Iron Creek Trail offer a great workout in the hills.
When the weather gets warm break out the mountain bikes and hit the trails. Spearfish has three big annual races: Pine Island Gravel Odyssey, Black Hills Super 6, and Dakota Five-O. The Pine Island Gravel Odyssey offers three separate distances (45-miles, 70-miles, and 110-miles). Black Hills Super 6 offers two separate courses, a 6-hour and a 3-hour course. The Dakota Five-O is the longest annual bike race in Spearfish and is dubbed the phrase, “race, ride, tour” along a 50-mile loop.
Grab your running shoes, cause there’s a big hiking and running community here as well! For the runners, there are three big events: Spearfish Canyon Half marathon/5K, Leading Ladies & Dakota Spirit Marathon/Half Marathon/10K/Relay/5K, and the Sundance to Spearfish Marathon.
For all the hikers, there are a variety of popular trails, scattered throughout Spearfish Canyon and up the mountains surrounding the town. For more details on the trails check out our hiking page.
Teams You Can Root For
Catch a game at Black Hills State University and cheer on the Yellow Jackets, repping green and yellow. Cheer on the Men’s and Women’s basketball teams, rodeo athletes, cross country and track and field. Watch the Women’s soccer, softball or soccer teams or catch a triathlon race or golf match. No matter the sport, support for the Yellow Jackets runs deep.
When the school year has ended, Spearfish welcomes baseball players from across the country who come to play for the Spearfish Sasquatch, the hometown collegiate baseball team. Be sure to grab a ticket as the Sasquatch battle it out all summer long for the Championship title.
