From light displays to shopping to pictures with Santa, one will find just what they are looking for to experience the holiday cheer in the Black Hills. Below is a list of events and festivities, leading up to Christmas Day
Festivities & Events Calendar:
Nov. 19-22 - Festival of Trees: Zonta Club of Spearfish will be hosting their 33rd annual Festival of Trees at the Tretheway Pavillion the beautifully decorated trees, wreaths and holiday decor to celebrate the season.
Nov. 29 - Pictures with Santa & Powder Dayze Release: Sawyer Brewing Co. and Nichole Rose Photography are hosting a family-friendly photo event with Santa to benefit BH Badges for Hope. Sessions for people and pets are $45 each and can be booked at the brewery or through Nichole Rose Photography. Photos will be available via a download link. Extra Powder Dayze Session IPA will also be released, and purchasing a brew or 4-pack enters participants in a drawing for a custom helmet.
Nov. 29 - Holiday Sip & Shop: Kick off the holiday season and do some early gift shopping at the Holiday Sip & Shop at Crow Peak Brewing on Nov. 29, starting at 12 pm! There will be many vendors with baked goods, unique craft items and more. The evening will include a tree lighting ceremony and an Angel Tree to spread the holiday cheer!
Nov. 29 - Magical Medora Christmas: The Magical Medora Christmas Tour 2025, holiday tradition, is returning on Nov. 29 from 3:30 pm at the Spearfish High School Auditorium! This show features professional talent from the region, this spectacular concert is the perfect family gift.
Dec. 1-31 - Holiday Lights Map: The Spearfish Rec Center have put together a list of beautifully decorated homes for the Holiday season. Cruise around town to see the awesome light displays for yourself! Wouldn't hurt to grab some hot chocolate for the road!
Dec. 2, 9,16,23,30 - Christmas Zumba: Get into the holiday spirit and join Spearfish Rec Center every Tuesday in December for Christmas Zumba! The classes start at 5:30 PM, and all participants are welcome for just $8.
Dec. 3 - 2025 Mistletoe and Canvas Art Gala: Artists supported by NHTC are hosting an art gala at Matthews Opera House on December 3rd from 6 to 8 PM. A free-will offering will support the artists, who will also have work for sale. Light appetizers and a cash bar will be available.
Dec. 3 - Signing Santa: Signing Santa will be at Jitter Joint from 4 pm to 6 pm on Dec. 3rd! Bring the kids out to enjoy the holiday festivities and learn how to sign with Santa. The evening includes photos with Santa, cooking decorating, and a ASL Holiday story time. This event is free and open to all families!
Dec. 4-7 - Hatchery Holidays: The D.C. Booth Historic Fish Hatchery will be hosting their annual holiday event. Browse through the gift shop to find the perfect present for those on your list this year. Roam the grounds to see the festive decorations and listen to the local musicians perform live! Don't forget, this family friendly event will have lots of holiday snacks and drink, along with a chance to see Santa!
Dec. 4 - Feast of St. Nicholas Open House: The annual Feast of St. Nicholas returns to Spearfish Saint Joseph Catholic Church! This family-fun event begins at 5 pm. The night will consist of hot chocolate, delicious foods, pictures with St. Nicholas, and St. Nicholas themed games and crafts. RSVP with the link in the title.
Dec. 4-6 - Madrigal Dinner: Black Hills State University welcomes back their Madrigal Dinner inside of the Meier Hall. Guest can expect a holiday meal and entertainment from 20-member vocal ensemble performing early Renaissance music in costume as a sixteenth-century royal court. Tickets are $65/person and this event will start at 5:30 pm
Dec. 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, & 20 - Winter Wonderland: Venture through Spearfish City Campground to see the beautiful light display created by local businesses! This event is hosted by Spearfish Optimist Club and is a free will donation to enter. This display is from 5 pm to 8 pm of the dates listed above.
Dec. 5 - Reason for the Season: The Vine Bakehouse and Coffee will be hosting Alexandra Hanson, as she guides you through a step-by-step tutorial of a Christmas painting! This class will start at 6 pm and is $45/person to participate. Reserve a spot ahead of time!
Dec. 6-20 - Christmas Shopper's Village: The High Plains Western Heritage Center will be hosting their annual Christmas Shopper's Village for the season! Stop by to see all the beautifully handmade items, that are perfect for those on your shopping list this year.
Dec. 6- Pie Exchange & Artist Reception: Enjoy cider, pumpkin pie, and local art at the 7th Annual Pie Exchange & Artist Reception, 4:00–5:30 PM at 741 N Main St, Suite 115, Spearfish SD. Featuring Olivia Jacobs’ photography and supporting the Artemis House—bring toiletries or donate online. Hosted by Hampton Wealth Management, a cozy evening of treats, creativity, and community impact.
Dec. 6 - Julefest Scanadinavian Christmas Festival & Bazaar: Still looking for the perfect holiday gift for those on your shopping list this year? Make your way to Our Savior's Lutheran Church for their vendor festival and live entertainment. There will be vendors with artisan craftmanship, baked goods, children's activities, and so much more!
Dec. 6 - Holiday Market: The Spearfish Rec Center are having their annual Holiday Market from 9 am to 3 pm. Get all your holiday gifts from the 75 local vendors at this event! From baked goods to hand-crafted items, there are plenty of wonderful gift offerings.
Dec. 6 - Holiday High Tea: The Matthews will be hosting their annual Holiday High Tea on Dec. 6, starting at 1 pm! Enjoy the delicious fresh pasteries& scones from Hannah's Bakery and the finest tea from Sage & Cedar. There will also be bottomless mimosas during this occasionl. Tickets range from $20-$40.
Dec. 6 - A Jazzy Christmas: Let the jazzy christmas tunes fill you with holiday cheer! Join High Plains Western Heritage Center for a live jazz performance by the Green Dolphin Band on Dec. 6, starting at 1:30 pm. This performance is an in-kind donation at the doors.
Dec. 6 - Holidazzle Light Parade and Community Tree Lighting: Visit Spearfish and The Spearfish Downtown Business Association will be hosting the Holidazzle Lights Parade starting at 6 pm. The Community Tree Lighting, located by Leone's Creamery, will happen as Santa appears to kickstart the holiday season.
Dec. 7 - Pop-Up Tattoo Event at Black Hills Salt Cave & Spa: The Black Hills Salt Cave and Spa is teaming up with Emma from Duende Ink and many other vendors for the holiday season! This event will be from 12 pm to 4 pm and a great opportunity to load up on your holiday shopping for the year!
Dec. 7 - A Very Potter's Christmas: Join the High Plains Western Heritage Center for their annual Christmas performance from the Potters' at 1:30 pm! Listen to your favorite Holiday jingles to kick start the season! Make sure to purchase your tickets ahead of time, these are likely to sell quickly.
Dec. 7 - Killian's Winter Art Market: Killian's will be hosting their annual Winter Art Market from 5 pm to 8:30 pm! There will be 14 incredible local artists displaying their masterpieces from 5 pm to 8:30 pm. Grab your favorite cocktail, enjoy some tunes by The Carburetors, and browse through the art pieces of local artists!
Dec. 9 - Ugly Sweater Bingo: Crow Peak Brewing will be hosting a Ugly Sweater Bingo Night from 6 pm to 8 pm! Bring out your favorite festive sweaters, grab a delcious handcrafted beer, and a bingo card, & see where the night takes you!
Dec. 10 - Bellman Brown Bags Series: Spearfish Piano Duet Club: The Bellman Brown Bags Series featuring the Spearfish Piano Duet Club presents their annual holiday music event at Matthews Opera House starting at 12 pm. This event is free and open to the public to attend!
Dec. 10 - Wreath Making Class: Joyful Blooms Farm will be at Sawyer Brewing for a Wreath Making Class! This class will start at 6 pm on Wednesday. Each participant must pay a fee of $65/person and it is recommended to reserve a spot ahead of time due to the limited spots available.
Dec. 10 & 15 - Griswold's at Crow Peak Brewery: Alexandria Hansen will be at the Crow Peak Brewery for a guided paint class starting at 6 pm! The painting will be a fun holiday classic of the Griswolds. Tickets can be reserved for $45/person and there are limited spots available.
Dec. 12, 13, 14, 16, 19, 20 & 21 - Inspecting Carol: The Matthews Opera House presents the Inspecting Carol for the holiday season! This is a spoof of the Christmas Carol, where everyone forgets their lines and the rehearsal spirals out of control! The performances take place at 2 pm on Sundays and at 7 pm on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Dec. 12 - Griswold Ugly Sweater Christmas Party: Join the Griswold fun at Crow Peak Brewing for an Ugly Sweater Christmas Party! The night will consist of live music, food and drinks, and of course, chaos! Check the link to see what is all in store for this night of shenanigans.
Dec. 12 - Ugly Sweater Contest: The Ugly Sweater Contest is back at the False Bottom for the season! Stop by anytime after 8 pm and bring out your favorite festive sweaters to celebrate. There will likely be a prize offered at the end, so stick around for a chance to win!
Dec. 13 - Holiday Extravaganza: Join Santa, the Spearfish Fire Auxiliary, and the Spearfish Fire Department for an afternoon of holiday fun at the Fire Station from 1–4 PM! Enjoy festive decorations, crafts, cookies, games, photo areas, and pictures with Santa. This free community event is perfect for the whole family!
Dec. 13- Breakfast With Santa: Breakfast with Santa is happening at Lucky’s 13 Pub from 8am–11am! Come enjoy some festive fun, and there could even be a surprise guest joining him!
Dec. 13 & 14 - Holiday Cheers & Termespheres: Celebrate the season at the Termesphere Gallery's Holiday Open House! Discover the artistry of Dick Termes up close, find unique holiday gifts, and experience the world of Termespheres in a whole new way. Get some of your shopping done this year with the generous 10% off everying in the gallery just in time for the holidays!
Dec. 14 - Christmas on the High Plains: The annual Christmas special performed by Paul Larson and friends returns to the High Plains Western Heritage Center at 2 pm! Make sure to purchase your tickets ahead for this live performance.
Dec. 18 - Holiday Ornament Sip N' Paint: Spearfish Clayworks will be at Killian's, hosting a Holiday Ornament Sip N' Paint on Dec. 18! The class will be $35/person and will start at 7 pm. Tickets get participants the choice between three basic ornaments or two fancy ones. Reserve by clicking the link.
Dec. 19 - The Great Crow Peak Gingerbread Build-Off: How good are you at building at Gingerbread House? Put your skills to the test at The Great Crow PeakGingerbread Build-Off on Dec. 19th at 6 pm! Grab a teammate and participate for the fee of $12/person, which includes: a gingerbread kit, a beer each, and a shot at eternal gingerbread glory. There will also be a live performance by Heath Johnson to keep the festivities going!
Dec. 19 - Christmas Skate Night: Head down to the Spearfish Rec Center for Christmas Skate Night starting at 4 pm! Bring out your Christmas attire and join the fun. Those who are wanting to skate must pay $10/person and spectators must pay $5/person.
Dec. 20- Fundraising Christmas Cookie Walk: The Spearfish Senior Center is hosting its annual Christmas Cookie Walk on December 20 from 8 AM to noon or until sold out. Enjoy a wide variety of homemade cookies and candies sold by the pound, with no baking required. Open to the public and everyone welcome!
Dec. 20- Christmas Sugar Cookie Decorating Class: It's Christmas cookie season! Spearfish Rec Center is holding a Christmas sugar cookie decorating class, starting at 1:00PM. Spots fill up quickly, click here to reserve your spot! $45 per person. Happy decorating!
Dec. 20- Ugly Christmas Sweater Party at Flanigan's: Flanigan's Irish Pub will be hosting their Ugly Christmas Party! Stop by at 8 pm for the music and stick around until 9 pm to see who won the ugliest sweater award. There's a chance to win $50 gift card to Flanigan's Pub!
Dec. 20- Ugly Christmas Sweater Party: Grab you ugly sweaters and head down to False Bottom for their Ugly Sweater Christmas Party! The party starts at 9 pm and the party continues until 2 am.
Dec. 21- Spearfish Canyon Express: The Spearfish Canyon Express is back! Get your tickets now before they sell out by calling/texting Eric at 605-645-0416. Tickets are $25 per person, this will include our ride on the trolley from Visit Spearfish to the North Pole (Spearfish Canyon Lodge), cookies, activities, Santa meet and greet and a keepsake. All proceeds benefit the Hunter Tillman Foundation.
Dec. 21- Ugly Sweater Contest: Get ready to celebrate the season in style or in the ugliest sweater you can find. Join the Tucked Tie for an Ugly Sweater Party and Contest starting at 8:00 PM. Prizes will be awarded for both the best and the ugliest sweaters. Come for the laughs and stay for the fun. Hint: Tucked under Nonna's Kitchen!
Dec. 22- Christmas Cocoa Jamboree: Jitter Joint’s Christmas Cocoa Jamboree offers a cozy holiday evening for families, featuring a holiday movie, build-your-own hot chocolate bar, ornament-making, and open play. $15 per child, free for members.
