Organized and maintained by the Forest Service, the trail network stretches across 550 miles of the 1.2 million-acre Black Hills National Forest. The Forest Service is continually working to improve and expand the trail network and 710 miles will eventually be marked specifically for off-highway vehicle use.
Trails in the Northern Hills are located near Iron Creek Lake, Galena, Nemo and west of Cheyenne Crossing. Though signage on the trails helps riders recognize their location, officials recommend keeping a motor vehicle use map handy, as well. Maps are available from the Northern Hills District office in spearfish and the Visit Spearfish office, or can be printed off in color from the Forest Service website.
Under the federal directive, all OHV riders that intend to use the highways to reach trail-heads also need to license their machines for highway use. In-state licenses and temporary out-of-state permits can be purchased at the Lawrence County Treasurer's office.
