Around 350 miles of groomed trails overlook scenic views, canyons and winter streams. In addition, most of the Black Hills National Forest is open to off-road snowmobiling. Both families and daredevil snowmobilers looking for hill climbs can enjoy the ride.
Near Spearfish, Savoy hosts a very popular snowmobile trailhead accessing the 300-hundred mile Black Hills trail system. Starting near Spearfish, the trail runs to Custer, Wyoming and back to the eastern edge of the Black Hills.
Trails open around December 15 and pathways are groomed every night during the winter. Snowmobile servicing, rentals and guides are available for the whole family, and along the trail you’ll find pit stops, gas, warming shelters, trailheads and plenty of parking. If you bring your own snowmobiles, they must be licensed, either permanently or with five-day temporary passes for $10. Sled operators must be at least 16 years old.
