Spearfish Weekend Forecast - Camping

by Phoebe Caldwell | June 30, 2020

Summertime calls for roasting marshmallows by the fire, long sunny nights, and spending time outside. There are many options of camping, and whether you are an extreme or casual camper, the Northern Black Hills and Spearfish is the place for you. This place is the backyard of outdoor adventures of all types and can accommodate the camper looking for the minimalist experience in the forest to the “full-timer” who lives year-round in a luxury RV or motorhome.

Rustic Camping

Spearfish, Dispersed Camping

Spearfish Canyon is a great spot for dispersed camping for those wanting to experience nature firsthand. This type of camping is suitable for those are not afraid of “roughing it” and look for places to wander where the Wi-Fi is weak. Dispersed camping has limited access to showers, bathrooms, trash bins, and the like.  Campers are responsible for packing out what they pack in and enjoying the Black Hills in its most organic form

Camping like a Local

City Campground

For the campers who are wanting to be close to in-town amenities, there are plenty of campgrounds located around town – one of which is the Spearfish City Campground. There are facilities at the campgrounds that offer shower houses and access to firepits for cookouts. Full hook-ups and water are also available. Wanting to spend some time in the water? Campers can access Spearfish Creek right outside of their tents or campers by dipping their toes in the water, “tubing” the Creek or even fly fishing. DC Booth National Historic Fish Hatchery is connected to the campground and promises fun for all ages.

Staying in Style

Many of the Spearfish-area campgrounds are host to all shapes and sizes of campers and RVs and can accommodate even the largest and most luxurious. People looking for this type of experience prefer the amenities of home, but still want to enjoy a campfire for some bonding time with friends or family. Some campsites have accessibility to pools and picnic areas for those interested in some outdoor fun. Chris’ Campground has access to two different pools and a pavilion with a grill for those who want to gather to celebrate as a group. As a very bike friendly community, access to major attractions like the Termesphere Gallery and Historic Downtown can be easily accessed. As the basecamp for your Black Hills adventure, camping in Spearfish will not disappoint.
