What happens when you mix Spearfish’s outdoor recreation and some friendly competition? The 28 Below Fatbike Race. Snowy weather and cooler temperatures do not stop these riders as they are committed to coming in first in this yearly event.
The 50k lollypop loop starts and finishes at Spearfish Canyon Lodge, near Spearfish SD and follows the groomed snowmobile trails that are permitted by the USFS. Race day is the only day of the year that riders are permitted on the groomed snowmobile trail here which makes it one-of-a-kind!
Although you ride on some groomed snowmobile trails, the whole race won’t be that easy. During the race you will hit areas like the Schoolhouse Snowpit. Depending on the conditions, this mile long stretch of the race can be considered a “hike-a-bike” with deeper snow making it harder to ride then the groomed trails. Full course descriptions can be found here.
Although the race takes place on March 17th, the snow conditions tend to hold in the high country of the hills. That being said, be sure to prepare for South Dakota’s unpredictable weather!
When the race ends and all of the contestants pass the finish line, the party doesn’t stop! The after party will be held at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge with free beer for racers from the Crow Peak Brewing, Co. and door prizes will be given away throughout the party!
So what are you waiting for? Come to Spearfish, enjoy the great outdoors and some amazing competition during the 28 Below!
The race is capped at 150 riders so be sure to register for the race here! Online registration ends March 11th.
