A Dog-friendly City

Family Friendly Outdoor Adventure Arts & History

The good people of Spearfish are very outdoorsy and adventuresome, which translates into Spearfish being an exceptionally dog-friendly city. Here are a few spots your four-legged friend is welcome:

  1. FRUITDALE
Fruitdale is an unadulterated field on the edge of town, fenced in, with a dirt path running along side the fence. This path connects to the bike path as well as Fruitdale Lane itself. The creek runs the entire length of the field, and there are several spots deep enough for both man and dog to jump in! You can also spot fly fishers and bicyclists out here.
  2. SPEARFISH CREEK WINE BAR
Located next to Grant Street Liquor, the wine bar serves beer, wine, and other malt beverages. They have a beautiful porch and backyard where you can listen to the creek and drink a beer on while your dog sits by your feet. If your dog is well behaved, the bar tender may let you bring it inside too.
  3. IRON CREEK TRAIL
The Iron Creek Trail runs between Iron Creek and the edge of the canyon walls. The trail is fairly flat, making it easy enough for old dogs, but lengthy enough for a young dog. Iron Creek is dotted with waterfalls and small mossy caves and has accessible parking.
  4. CROW PEAK BREWERY
Unlike the wine bar, Crow Peak prefers that your dog remain on the outside balcony or on the patio. But no worries! Throughout the summer, musicians are often playing in the evening, and they keep a bowl of water for any four-legged friends that stop by.
  5. SPEARFISH CITY CAMPGROUND
The campground is open for tent and RV camping from May-October. It is nestled between the canyon (accessible via bike path), the hatchery, and Spearfish park, all places your pooch is welcomed on-leash. The creek runs through the campground, as do several small tributaries.
  6. SPEARFISH CANYON DISC GOLF COURSE
This disc golf course is also open all year round, free of charge, and has recently been expanded to a whopping 28 holes. Benefits of going during winter include avoiding the crowds and being able to find your disc easier. This disc golf course covers a lot of ground and connects to the jogging path.

There are many other places throughout Spearfish that welcome our canine friends, including an off-leash dog park, and our extensive bike path system. While Spearfish is a dog-friendly community, please keep in mind dogs must be on leash within city limits.
